On 27 January 2018, FWF visited the Pearl Valley Golf Course in the Cape region between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. The course is located on an estate with houses looking over the fairways and greens. Although we used buggies, fully equipped with cold water, tees and navigation, the course is walkable and offers splendid views. The club house is enormous and luxurious, and the entire place just breathes wealth in every aspect.
Pearl Valley is considered to be one of the top courses in the region – and it lived up to our expectations. Currently, the Cape region is suffering from extreme draught but this is not visible as on this course with the automated sprinklers everywhere and greenkeepers manning the hoses on many of the holes. This was the greenest course we played the entire week.
The design and the layout of this Jack Niklaus course is very pleasing but not as spectacular as the price (green fee € 125 including buggy). Certainly, one pays for the abundance of staff that are all professional and very helpful. Electric buggy’s, natural grass driving range, well-equipped halfway house, good pro shop, this course offers everything you need from start to finish.
Although the price is rather steep, the course is well-worth playing. The quality is just great. Perhaps the low handicapper would like a bit more distance and undulation but the fast greens provide sufficient challenge. We really have difficulty to find anything negative about Pearl Valley. A real treat!
